Lemhi County Historical Society & Museum

Exhibit Guide

Artifacts are Rotated, but always reflect these exhibits and the flavor of Lemhi County, so its important to visit the museum often.

INDIAN ARTIFACTS. The Lemhi County Historical Museum, established in 1963, offers a historical tour through the "Old West". It houses the largest extant collection of Lemhi Shoshone (Agai Dika) artifacts. Clothing, beadwork arrowheads, ceremonial accessories, and an extensive photograph collection detail the traditional lives of Sacajawea's people.

GOLD & MINING. The 1866 discovery of gold in the mountains above Salmon City introduced a new era in the area's history as miners, ranchers, and lumbermen created a new community along the banks of the Salmon River and numerous other smaller camps and towns throughout the county. These histories are recreated in displays of historical implements and photographs.

Statue from Ray Edwards' CollectionRAY EDWARDS ASIAN COLLECTION. In 1966, on the centennial of the gold discovery, the Ray Edwards estate donated a collection of Asian artifacts and built an additional room in which to display them. Elegant displays of lost-wax bronze figurines, Samurai swords, cloisonné vases from the Ming Dynasty, and numerous other antiques illustrate cultural aspects of the social strata.
